What does the word mittens mean?
The word comes from the French miton which designated the metal glove made up of an articulated finger cot for the thumb and two or three protection plates used by soldiers (15th-16th centuries) and which later, already replaced by mitaine, corresponded to the muff in which the ladies warmed their hands
Why are mittens fingerless gloves?
Mitten gloves were specially designed for jobs that need to protect the hand against cold or humidity, but that require greater freedom and mobility of the fingers.
