Valencian Community Crafts Awards

A piece of mine has been finalist in the 2021 “Valencian Community Crafts” Awards in its 8th edition, in the Vanguard section.

The next step is for the jury to decide the winners of each of the categories.

Hopefully I am one of them !!

The characteristics of this award are:

VANGUARD AWARD

Object. The purpose of this award is to reward works characterized by their high creative value and their innovative spirit from a functional and formal perspective, evaluating the following aspects:

- The adaptation or reinterpretation of a traditional design in its formal aspects and / or

functional, and / or the innovative use of traditional materials or processes

- The technical and formal quality

- Adaptation to the market and commercial potential

For me it is a great honor to be part of the 11 leading artisan companies in the Valencian Community in terms of innovation and modernization of textile crafts.

Poncho merino wool

My piece is an interpretation of the "Poncho" used in the past by transhumant shepherds and that was made of woolen (coarse) full-bodied fabric.

Piece made from natural fibers beaten and felted manually on a cotton base:

- 19 micron Merino Wool

- Lana Gotland

- Lana Gray Face Dartmoor (breed in danger of extinction)

- Alpaca (at least 40% of the piece)

- Cashmere

 Poncho merino wool

All fibers come from Welfair certified herds (Animal Welfare). The animals graze free on land without sulfates or other chemicals.

The cotton base is unmercerized and unsealed (actually, it is a cotton fabric used to make cheese).

It is a felt made by hand on a woven base with a plain weave.

The placement of the fibers on the base varies according to the design; in this case, they are whipped manually until the fibers and the fabric are perfectly interwoven, by means of a mechanical process based on heat and friction.
